This week, we are speaking to Craig Ryder, a PhD researcher at SOAS, University of London on Truth, Information & Synthetic Realities in Sri Lanka. Craig is a digital anthropologist concerned with disinformation, social media and the nascent technology of synthetic media. Building on his journalism experience in Sri Lanka, Craig’s PhD research looks to not only understand the impact of fake news on democracy but how communities are mitigating its effect.

His research interests include analyzing the complex intersection between technology and society, people-centred social policies in the global South, digital journalism, social media and politics, media and democracy, media and conflict and the role of artificial intelligence in changing African newsrooms. He currently leads the international research project Social Media, Misinformation and Elections in Kenya and Zimbabwe (SoMeKeZi) funded by the Social Science Research Council (2019-2021).
